Updated 2024 Porsche Taycan completes 3.6 million kilometres of testing

Ahead of its unveiling, Porsche has been testing the facelifted Taycan in climates across the globe, including at -41 degrees Celsius in the Arctic Circle.

Porsche has confirmed the updated Taycan electric car has completed 3.6 million kilometres of testing ahead of its unveiling in the coming months.

According to the German carmaker, the “extensively remapped” electric four-door sedan will remain available globally in sedan, Sport Turismo wagon and Cross Turismo high-riding wagon body styles.

Few details of the updated model have been confirmed so far, however the updates are expected to go beyond what is usually expected of a mid-cycle facelift.

Reports suggest the upcoming flagship Taycan model may be powered by three electric motors with up to 735kW – up from two in the current range-topping Turbo S – after lapping Germany’s Nurburgring race track in seven minutes and 7.55 seconds, or 25 seconds faster than the previous model.

The testing procedure reportedly took place across a mix of proving grounds, race tracks and public roads in 17 countries.

Extreme climates were included, with temperatures reaching 53 degrees Celsius in California’s Death Valley, and dropping to -41 degrees Celsius in the Arctic Circle.

According to Porsche, 300,000 kilometres were driven in cold temperatures – through so-called “challenging conditions” including frozen lakes and deep snow – while 200,000km was covered in hot environments.

“At Porsche, electric cars must undergo the same rigorous testing programme as our combustion-engine sports cars,” said Head of Taycan Testing, Florian Stahl, said in a media statement.

The updated Taycan’s charging system was also tested at extreme temperatures, where it reportedly halved charging times in a cold climate compared to the previous model.

At the other end of the scale, the Taycan’s battery thermal management system was reportedly tested whilst the vehicle was charged in the harsh Californian heat.
