2024 Renault 5 production model revealed in patents – UPDATE

Just weeks after an online presentation showed a glimpse of the upcoming Renault 5, online patent images have confirmed the final look of the electric city hatch before it enters production.

UPDATE, Wednesday 13 December 2023: Patent images have been leaked of the 2024 Renault 5 E-Tech, with the styling of the electric city hatch now locked in ahead of production.

The news comes less than a month after Renault provided a sneak peek at the production version during an online presentation.

The patent images confirm Renault won’t stray far from the original 5 concept, with the showroom version to be heavily influenced by the original Renault 5 city car of the 1970s and 80s.

Our original story continues unchanged below.

Friday 17 November 2023: The forthcoming Renault 5 electric hot hatch has made a cameo appearance during a presentation by the French car maker, ahead of its unveiling at the Geneva motor show next February.

Renault unveiled its Twingo concept earlier this week, during which it provided a glimpse of what is believed to be the production version of the Renault 5 electric vehicle, due to go on sale in 2024.

While the production car has retained many of the design elements as the concept version – first shown in February 2023 – the large ‘Renault’ illuminated script on the front bumper no longer remains.

The concept’s flush door handles have also been swapped out for more traditional pull-handle items, and the Renault 5 now appears to have smaller black aerodynamic wheels – echoing the wheel design on the concept.

The black roof and red pinstripes which follow the side windows also remain.

Overall, the production model stays mostly true to the original concept car, with the most noticeable changes being made to increase air intake at the front bumper, while the square daytime-running lights are now each split into four 90-degree corners.

The Renault 5 is a modern take on the brand’s iconic city hatch from the 1970s and 1980s, before the model was eventually replaced by the Clio.

It’s expected the hatchback will be powered by a 100kW electric motor on the front axle, fed by a circa-50kWh battery pack with an estimated 400 kilometres of driving range.

The Renault 5 will ride on the ‘CMF-BEV’ electric-car platform – now renamed ‘AmpR Small’ – which is designed for electric cars only, but borrows parts from the ‘CMF-B’ chassis below the Renault Clio, Renault Captur SUV, and Nissan Juke small SUV to reduce cost.

Handling is expected to be a selling point of the Renault hot hatch, after the French brand confirmed the model will use multi-link independent rear suspension – an atypical feature of vehicles of this size.

The 2024 Renault 5 is due to be unveiled next year ahead of showroom arrivals in Europe.

Renault Australia has expressed a “significant interest” in bringing the car to Australia, though it has yet to confirm whether the model will join the local line-up.
