  • One model grade equivalent to Europe’s mid-range specification
  • 450km claimed driving range
  • Priced from $64,990 plus on-road costs

The 2024 Renault Megane E-Tech Electric is due in Australian showrooms early next year priced from $64,990 plus on-road costs.

The Megane E-Tech Electric – unveiled in Europe nearly two years ago – is a new small SUV on dedicated electric-car underpinnings, which has replaced the old Megane petrol hatch, and is about the same size as the Renault Captur petrol city SUV.

One model grade will be offered by Renault in Australia initially – the EV60 – equivalent to a middle-of-the-range, rather than top-specification variant in Europe.

Priced from $64,990 plus on-road costs – or close to $70,000 drive-away – it will be the most expensive passenger vehicle the company sells in Australia.

However it is less expensive than the final Renault Megane RS petrol hot hatchbacks which arrived earlier this year – the Ultime, priced from $67,500 to $70,500 plus on-road costs – as well as the highest-priced Renault the company still sells, the Master bus ($68,700 plus on-roads).

The local distributor for Renault Australia has elected to sell the vehicle through its 58 showrooms nationally, rather than move to online, fixed-price sales to manage limited electric-car allocations as other car makers have done.

Powering the EV60 is a 160kW/300Nm electric motor driving the front wheels, fed by a 60kWh pack good for a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.4 seconds, and 454km of claimed driving range in European WLTP testing.

Renault claims DC charging capability at up to 130kW, said to allow 300km of WLTP driving range (15 to 80 per cent charge) to be added in 30 minutes.

Home AC charging appears to peak at 7.4kW, for a zero to 100 per cent charge on a 7.4kW or 22kW home wallbox in a claimed nine hours and 15 minutes.

Standard equipment in Australia’s EV60 launch model includes 20-inch alloy wheels, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, 9.0-inch touchscreen, cloth and synthetic leather-look seats, six speakers, adaptive LED headlights, and a full suite of advanced safety technology.

It misses out on top-of-the-range features available in Europe, including a larger 12-inch portrait touchscreen, nine-speaker Harman Kardon stereo and leather seats.

Six exterior colours will be available – Rafale Grey, Shadow Grey, Solid White, Diamond Black, Flame Red, and Night Blue – with a choice of body-coloured or contrasting black or grey roof finishes, depending on the lower body colour selected.

The Megane E-Tech Electric measures 4200mm long, 1768mm wide and 1500mm tall, on a 2685mm wheelbase.

Compared to the outgoing Megane petrol hatch – sold exclusively in high-performance RS form since 2019 – the electric car is about 160mm shorter in overall length, 110mm narrower and 65mm lower, but 15mm longer between the wheels due to the electric-car platform.

It is a similar size to the petrol Renault Captur city SUV, as well as a Mazda CX-3, Ford Puma, or the outgoing Hyundai Kona Electric.

The 2024 Renault Megane E-Tech Electric is available to order now ahead of expected Australian showroom arrivals early next year, as previously reported by Drive.
