The Mazda CX-90 six- or seven-seat SUV – which replaces the CX-9 – is the first Mazda in close to three decades to break the $100,000 price barrier.

UPDATE, 14 August 2023: The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has now arrived in Australian showrooms.
Compared to the prices announced in March, the CX-90 is up to $1530 cheaper due to movements in the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold on July 1 – with the range now priced from $73,800 to $93,655 plus on-road costs (such as stamp duty, registration and CTP, but after LCT and GST).
The CX-90 G50e Touring is now below the LCT threshold – and as a result has a $585 price reduction – while buyers of the G50e GT, G50e Azami and D50e Azami will now pay up to $1350 less in Luxury Car Tax than initial pricing estimates.
The diesel engine costs between $2000 more and $1115 less than the petrol – depending on model – as its more frugal 5.4L/100km fuel use claim means it benefits from a higher LCT threshold for vehicles with claimed fuel economy of less than 7.0L/100km.
The cost of the SP and Takumi packages have climbed from $5000 each, to $6500 each compared to the March 2023 prices.

22 March 2023, updated: The cheapest version of the new 2024 Mazda CX-90 large family SUV costs nearly $27,000 – or about 60 per cent – more than the most affordable variant of the CX-9 seven-seater it replaces.
The CX-90 – the largest Mazda SUV ever sold in Australia – is available in a choice of three model grades (Touring, GT and Azami), with turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol or diesel power.
Its starting price from $73,800 plus on-road costs is $26,200 more than the cheapest version of the vehicle it will eventually replace – the seven-year-old CX-9 – and $780 less than the most expensive CX-9 variant in showrooms today.
However, Mazda Australia says the CX-90 is better equipped than the car it replaces – and claims, when compared to a similarly-equipped CX-9 (GT all-wheel drive), the price gap is $5100.
Nevertheless, the new starting price for Mazda’s full-size family SUV has brought about an unprecedented hike from one model to the next.

The top-of-the-range CX-90 is priced from $93,655 plus on-road costs (Azami petrol) – making it the second-most expensive Mazda ever sold in Australia, behind the RX-7 SP sports car of 1995 ($101,515).
With one of the optional $6500 packages fitted – which add unique trim and a six-seat layout (two individual second-row seats) – the price hits $100,155 plus on-road costs, or close to $110,000 drive-away.
A plug-in hybrid version is planned for Australia, but it is not due until the second half of 2024.
The CX-90 is the largest of four SUVs on Mazda’s new rear- and all-wheel-drive vehicle architecture – and the second to arrive in Australia after the smaller, five-seat CX-60 ($59,800 to $85,500 plus on-road costs).
Three model grades are available – Touring, GT and Azami – with seven seats as standard (2-3-2 layout), and a choice of 3.3-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
Both engines are mated with eight-speed multi-clutch automatic transmissions, aided by 48-volt mild-hybrid technology – which gives a small extra boost to the engine at low speed – and rear-biased all-wheel drive.
The ‘G50e’ petrol engine develops 254kW and 500Nm – making it the most powerful mass-produced Mazda road car ever, 46kW/50Nm more than the CX-60 petrol – while the ‘D50e’ diesel quotes 187kW/550Nm, matching the CX-60.
Claimed fuel consumption is rated at 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres for the petrol – 0.8L/100km less than the less powerful four-cylinder CX-9 petrol AWD – or 5.4L/100km for the diesel, said to be best in class, and 0.2L/100km less than a Toyota Kluger Hybrid.
Although the new six-cylinder petrol engine is more efficient than the CX-9’s four-cylinder, it now requires dearer 95-octane premium petrol, rather than 91-octane regular unleaded (or E10) as before.
Measuring 5100mm long, 1994mm wide and 1745mm tall, on a 3120mm wheelbase, the CX-90 is 25mm longer overall, 25mm wider, 4mm lower and 190mm longer between the front and rear wheels than the CX-9.
Mazda claims 608 litres of boot space with all three seating rows in place (up from 230L in the CX-9), expanding to 1163L with the third row folded (up from 810L), and 2025L with the second and third rows stowed.
Braked towing capacity is rated up to 2000kg in the diesel and 2500kg in the petrol, while most models are about 200kg heavier than equivalent CX-9s.
Standard features in the CX-90 Touring include 19-inch wheels, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 7.0-inch instrument display, LED headlights, surround-view camera, power-adjustable front seats, leather trim, eight speakers, hands-free power tailgate, head-up display, and a full suite of advanced safety technology.
This standard equipment level is equivalent to, or just below the GT version of the current CX-9 – which is priced from $68,700 plus on-road costs with all-wheel drive.
More expensive model grades add 21-inch wheels, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, 12.3-inch instrument display, adaptive LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, 12-speaker Bose sound system, and power steering column adjustment.
Optional $6500 SP and Takumi packages swap the three-seat second-row bench for individual ‘captain’s chairs’ with ventilation, and add unique white or tan seat trim.
