2023 MG 4 price and specs: Electric car to start from $44,990

The MG 4 electric hatchback is due to reach Australia in a choice of three model grades priced from $44,990 plus on-road costs – but cheaper models are under consideration.

  • 2023 MG 4 pricing and specifications
  • Three-model launch range with two battery sizes
  • Cheaper 51kWh battery and all-wheel-drive performance model on the cards
  • Priced from $44,990 plus on-road costs

The 2023 MG 4 electric car from China will arrive in Australia later this year in a choice of three model grades priced from $44,990 plus on-road costs.

Due in showrooms in the second half of this year, the MG 4 – an electric hatchback the size of a Toyota Corolla – will be available with 64kWh or 77kWh battery packs, and Excite or Essence model grade.

The $44,990 price is dearer the $43,990 RRP MG ZS EV Excite small SUV – and misses out on the title of Australia’s cheapest new electric car.

MG Australia says a more affordable 51kWh Excite base model is under consideration, as well as a high-performance, all-wheel-drive X-Power model with more than 300kW, and a 0-100km/h sprint time of less than four seconds.

If they are given the green light for Australia, they could be in showrooms before the end of this year – a few months after the three MG 4 launch variants. The 51kWh version could cost close to $40,000 plus on-road costs.

Powering the 64kWh models is a 150kW electric motor driving the rear axle and a 64kWh (total capacity; or 61.7kWh usable) battery, while the 77kWh versions step up to a battery of the previously-mentioned capacity, and 180kW rear electric motor.

MG claims driving range on Europe’s WLTP test cycle of 450km for the 64kWh Excite, 435km for the 64kWh Essence, and 530km for the 77kWh Essence.

Zero to 100km/h acceleration times of 7.9 seconds, 7.9 seconds and less than seven seconds are quoted respectively.

The 64kWh versions can charge at up to 138kW DC, claimed to be good for a 10 to 80 per cent recharge time of 28 minutes on a 150kW plug. Charging details for the 77kWh version have not been disclosed.

Standard features on the Excite model include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four speakers, a reversing camera, fabric seat upholstery, and safety features such as autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assist.

However, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert – which are standard on cheaper MG petrol cars, and a $30,000 Isuzu D-Max work ute – are reserved for the Essence grades, which start from $47,990 plus on-road costs.

These models add 18-inch wheels, a black roof, leather-look seat trim, embedded satellite navigation, a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging, a six-speaker stereo, and more.

The three 2023 MG 4 launch variants are available to order now, ahead of first showroom arrivals due in the coming months – understood to be slated for September, pending any delays.
