VFACTS December 2022: Tesla leads electric-car charge, ends Toyota Camry’s 28-year winning streak

Tesla sales almost doubled last year and accounted for almost two out of every three electric vehicles sold in Australia – as the Tesla Model 3 ended the Toyota Camry’s 28-year dominance of the mid-size segment.

Electric-car specialist Tesla continued to charge up the sales charts in Australia last year – almost doubling its sales from the year prior.

In a major upset, the Tesla Model 3 electric car ended the Toyota Camry’s 28-year winning streak in the mid-size sedan category, after the Tesla Model 3 posted a record 10,877 sales in Australia last year ahead the Toyota Camry tally of 8717 deliveries.

Just two Tesla vehicles – the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV – drove the US auto giant to 16th place outright on the sales charts ahead of established brands such as Audi, Honda, and Volvo.

Figures released today showed 33,410 electric vehicles were reported as sold in Australia in 2022, an increase of 549 per cent (from a low base of 5149 electric vehicles sales in 2021).

Although electric cars achieved a significant sales surge they still only represent 3.1 per cent of all new motor vehicle sales. By comparison, hybrid cars accounted for 7.6 per cent of the new-car market last year.

China’s BYD was the second-best selling electric car brand in Australia in December 2022, ranking ahead of Audi, Honda, Volvo and BMW.

Volvo’s Chinese electric-car offshoot Polestar struggled to gain traction in its first full year on sale, reporting just 1524 cars as sold in 2022.

In the month of December 2022, BYD sold almost as many cars as Polestar did for the entire calendar year.

More than two-dozen new electric cars are due on sale in Australia this year, including from Toyota, Subaru, MG, Kia, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Cupra.

Industry analysts say electric cars will continue to demonstrate rapid sales growth in Australia over the rest of the decade as more models become available, giving consumers a broader choice.

Hybrid vs Plug-In Hybrid vs Electric Car Sales in Australia 2022

  • Hybrid car sales: 81,786, up 16 per cent (7.6 per cent of total new-car market)
  • Electric car sales: 33,410, up 549 per cent (3.1 per cent of total new-car market)
  • Plug-in hybrid sales: 5937, up 76 per cent (0.5 per cent of total new-car market)
