The Subaru brand has proven its qualities to us over the years, and this vehicle was a replacement as our previous car was handed onto our kids.
Overall, we have assessed Subaru car quality over long term ownership of previous cars, and this ticked a lot of boxes for us. It’s annoying that the Liberty model was dropped from Australian offerings, which made it necessary to purchase the top of the line Impreza model in order to have electrically operated seats. The Impreza has what I think is pretty close to state of the art safety and driver aids, so that’s all very positive.
It drives well, which is a Subaru trait that we have found over the years. Nothing untoward, and is very confidence inspiring. Despite claims from other Subaru owners and car reviewers that the CVT presents a problem for them, we have found that adjusting driving style brings about a slightly different experience, but nothing that presents any issues or grievances. Engine performance and fuel economy could be improved to at least equal that of similar sized alternative brands of vehicles.
This is very minor, but I am not sure that I really like the sports pedals. Shoes tend to slip off the smooth surface when dry but especially in wet conditions. Application of rough surface adhesive has sorted the matter out for me. As mentioned earlier, I also dislike that I needed the top of the line model for electric seats. I know that is two dislikes, but the first one is pretty minor, and should only count for quarter of a thing.
Two years old and some 25,000 kilometres of trouble-free motoring tells us that reliability is good. The real reliability test though will be in about 8 years with over 100,000 kilometres, so let us see then. If reliability is as good as our previous Subarus (6 years old with 220,000 kilometres), then I will be very satisfied. For our purposes the vehicle has been fit for purpose, with no downsides that come to mind.
