2019 Jaguar XJ to go electric – report

The next-generation Jaguar XJ could be reborn as an all-electric flagship limousine when it launches sometime next year, according to a new report out of the UK.

Autocar claims it has learned from an anonymous source the XJ will become the technology showcase for the brand with its all-electric powertrain while also previewing a new design direction – it’s believed it will become a swoopy five-door liftback, a la the Panamera.

Jaguar’s new flagship is said to be closely-related to Range Rover’s anticipated car-like model, dubbed ‘Road Rover‘, and borrow heavily from the upcoming I-Pace electric SUV (below), which launches in overseas markets in the coming months.

With its new-age electric powertrain, the new XJ will also aim to increase the brand’s presence in emissions-conscious markets outside Europe like China and the US, challenging the likes of the Tesla Model S.

A dual-motor electric set-up is expected, along with a driving range of over 300 miles (483km). For reference, the I-Pace concept revealed last year features system outputs of 294kW and 700Nm from its two electric motors, with range claimed at up to 500km from its 90kWh battery.

It’s claimed the new XJ will be revealed towards the end of 2018 – potentially at this year’s Paris motor show in October – ahead of a launch sometime next year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Jaguar’s flagship nameplate.
