2019 Toyota Supra spied with production tail-lights

The new Toyota Supra has been spied again around the Nurburgring track in Germany.

This latest prototype has been fitted with, what looks to be, the production-ready tail-light design, which inevitably uses LEDs to create a unique signature.

Elsewhere, this latest vehicle doesn’t look different to the car spied back in August. There’s still a large collection false body panels underneath the camouflage, serving to further obscure the car’s final design.

According to a report overnight in AutoExpress, the new Supra could forgo Toyota badging in favour of the company’s Gazoo Racing sub-brand.

With the roadster and sports car segments not enjoying the same level of sales as in years gone by, Toyota and BMW have teamed up to develop a pair of two-door vehicles based on a front-engine, rear-wheel drive platform.

BMW’s model, to be known as the Z4, will be available as a convertible and has been previewed by concept car, which was revealed at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

It’s understood the Toyota version will be sold solely as a coupe. Externally, at least, the two cars have completely unique designs, although the Supra prototypes have used BMW wing mirrors.

For its next generation, the Z4 will ditch its current folding hardtop setup for a more traditional soft-top.

Drivetrains for both vehicles have yet to be confirmed, but a production sheet spied in May showed the Z4 will be available with a 145kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, six-speed manual, and rear-wheel drive.

The rumour mill has indicated the new Z4 will be also be available with a six-cylinder option, while the Supra may come with a hybrid drivetrain.

A report in August suggested the Supra could be offered with a manual transmission, and a turbocharged six-cylinder engine developing over 400hp (298kW).
