The next-generation Peugeot 508 has been spotted doing a spot of testing in southern Europe.

While the current 508 has reportedly sold reasonably in its native France or some other European countries, the new car will look to expand its appeal elsewhere with a sportier fastback-style rear-end.

Aside from its move into Volkswagen Arteon territory, the new 508 will continue the subtly handsome styling theme of recent Peugeot models.

As such, the 508 features a soft shoulder line, as well as a character line above the rear wheel arch similar to the one seen on the current 308 range.

In 2014, Maxime Picat, Peugeot’s CEO, hinted at a multi-prong executive car range, with a formal sedan model joined by a sportier fastback model. It seems as though the latter, at least, has been approved for production.

It’s unknown if the former has been given the go-ahead, but if it has, it will likely be targeted at the Chinese market.

Under the skin, the new 508 will use the company’s EMP2 platform, and will be powered by a selection of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

Carlos Tavares, head of the PSA Group, confirmed in 2015 the next-generation 508 will be available with a greater selection of driver assistance and autonomous driving technologies, including hands-free steering, and automated braking in traffic, on highways and during parking.
