The New South Wales (NSW) Police have taken delivery of a new Chrysler 300 SRT, with the large sports sedan tipped to take over duties from the locally-produced Holden Commodore when Australian manufacturing concludes in October.
While it’s been decked out with ‘Highway Patrol’ branding, the sole 300 SRT police car (at least, for now) is only being used as a show vehicle, making appearances at shows, sporting events and public displays.
Under the bonnet is a 6.4-litre Hemi V8, developing 350kW of power and 637Nm of torque.
This comes after parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Australia Australia boss, Steve Zanlunghi, told media at the launch of the Alfa Romeo Giulia in December that the company’s local arm has been in talks with local police forces and fleet companies to replace the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore with Australian manufacturing drawing to a close.
Other vehicles under consideration to replace the large Aussie sedans include the upcoming Kia Stinger and the next-generation European-sourced Holden Commodore (nee Insignia), while the SUV duties previously served by the Ford Territory have been replaced with the Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Kluger in Victoria.
The Hyundai Sonata has also been confirmed to replace the Queensland Police’s six-cylinder gleet, and the higher-powered Sonata Turbo is under consideration for higher-performance duties in the Sunshine State.
