Honda CR-V to be offered with 2.0-litre entry-level price leader?

Honda‘s all-new CR-V is just around the corner with an expected local launch in July.

While the company has only confirmed one engine — a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 140kW of power and 240Nm of torque, mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) — and both a front- and all-wheel drive drivetrain, there could be another engine coming.

Honda Australia has registered the following engine variants with the government body responsible for vehicle certification:

  • 1.5-litre front-wheel drive five seat (17-inch wheels)
  • 1.5-litre all-wheel drive five seat (18-inch wheels)
  • 1.5-litre front-wheel drive seven seat (18-inch wheels)
  • 1.5-litre front-wheel drive five seats (18-inch wheels)
  • 2.0-litre front-wheel drive five seats (17-inch wheels)

It appears that the company could be gearing up to also offer an entry-level 2.0-litre front-wheel drive model with five seats. While the engine offers a larger capacity than the 1.5-litre, it’s naturally aspirated and produces just 113kW of power. It too is mated to a CVT.

According to the registry information, the higher-specification front-wheel drive with 18-inch wheels and the higher-specification all-wheel drive with 18-inch wheels will come with a panoramic glass roof as an option and as standard respectively.

Based on an all-new architecture, the new CR-V features a longer wheelbase than the current iteration, meaning the already-generous rear passenger area will become even more accomodating.

Honda Australia’s group public relations manager Neil McDonald is remaining mum on the 2.0-litre petrol engine, suggesting that there are no plans to introduce it locally at this stage.

“We’ve announced the 1.5 Turbo, which will be across all grades. There are no plans for the 2.0-litre or diesel powertrains at this point,” McDonald said.

Full pricing and specifications for the all-new 2017 Honda CR-V range will be revealed closer to the local launch in July.
