The Volvo XC40 has been spied again, but this time around the spy photographers have managed to nab pictures of not only the car’s exterior, but also its interior.
This latest prototype, spotted in southern Europe, seems to be wearing the same level of camouflage as the vehicle spied in Sweden in February. Although without the snow, it’s easier see some of the car’s detailing.
Again, it’s clear the production XC40 is heavily inspired by the 2016’s 40.1 Concept, which includes a side window line that takes a dramatic turn upwards as it nears the C-pillar.
The spy photographers were able to snag photos of the XC40’s interior, including its dashboard, and front and rear seats.
Like the bigger XC60 and XC90, the XC40’s dash is dominated by a large portrait-oriented touchscreen, which will control most of the car’s infotainment, navigation and climate control functions.
We’ll reserve judgement until the production version is unveiled, but it seems the XC40’s interior is inspired by its larger and more expensive siblings, but will feature more black and grey plastic.
For passengers in the rear, the XC40 will be available with tablet-style screens mounted around half-way up the back of the front seats.
Under the skin, the new XC40 is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which Volvo is developing on behalf of its parent company, Geely. In time, CMA will also be found underneath the next-generation S40 sedan and the replacement for the V40 hatch.
The CMA setup will also be used to underpin vehicles for Geely’s new range of Lynk & Co vehicles, including the 01 crossover, and 03 sedan.
Power for the new XC40, and presumably other vehicles based on CMA, should come from a selection of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. The T5 ‘Twin Engine’ plug-in hybrid drivetrain will also be offered at some point.
The company has confirmed the new XC40 will make its debut in 2017, although the launch likely won’t happen until later in the year. This means global sales of the XC40 crossover won’t start until early 2018.
