The MG E-Motion concept is the sports car everyone has been waiting for, from the Chinese-owned British brand, and it’s also a very important step towards the company’s future, according to the man who designed it.

Speaking with media at the company’s research and design centre in Shanghai, Shao JingFeng, head designer at MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor, said the electric sports car concept previews what to expect from future models.

The company’s design boss said he wanted to make the brand’s models look “more friendly”, compared to the angular, “angry face” of the current line-up.

It’s the reason behind the clean, smooth and curvy lines of the E-Motion, right down to the more rounded badge – doing away with the sharply-cut hexagonal, and very iconic design of the existing logo.

JingFeng added the concept is more in-line with traditional British car design, which he described as “elegant” and is associated with a “rich [person’s] car”.

There are also UK-inspired design elements, including the headlights and LED daytime-running light signature – which are inspired by the reflection of the London Eye ferris wheel on the River Thames. (Mazda’s styling themes may also have provided some inspiration…)

Up front is a sporty, but welcoming face, which again is part of JingFeng’s plan to make the company’s cars look friendlier.

The new frontal treatment has already started on the ZS small SUV – due in Australia next year – and will likely be adapted to MG’s current range, including the MG3, MG6 and GS, as part of new-generation upgrades or mid-life facelifts.

Beneath the curvaceous surface of the E-Motion is also an all-new platform for electric vehicles, which will be shared across the MG and Roewe brands.
