Official pricing and specifications for the 2017 MG GS range have been announced this week, with the first SUV from the Chinese-owned British brand starting at $23,990 before on-road costs.

Offering medium SUV space for the price of a small one, the MG GS comes standard with turbo petrol power and offers a four-strong range including front- and all-wheel drive derivatives.

Measuring 4500mm long and 1855mm wide with a 2650mm wheelbase, the GS is 25mm longer and 5mm wider than a Hyundai Tucson, while offering above average luggage capacity at 483L – which expands to 1336L with the rear seats folded.

Although the company’s website previously confirmed a two-model assault, four models will be offered locally, with standard equipment across the range including rear parking sensors, bluetooth phone connectivity, alloy wheels, electronic park brake, automatic headlights and LED daytime-running lights.

Kicking off the range is the entry-level Vivid ($23,990 plus ORCs), which is powered by a 119kW/250Nm 1.5-litre ‘NetBlue’ four-cylinder turbo petrol engine mated solely to a six-speed manual transmission, sending drive to the front wheels.

In addition to the features listed above, the Vivid is equipped with a rear roof spoiler, roof rails, USB and auxiliary inputs, four-speaker audio system, fabric trim and map pockets on the front seatbacks – don’t laugh, some cars just don’t have them.

Stepping up to the Core brings price of entry to $25,990 before on-roads, and switches out the manual shifter for a standard seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Other additional equipment over the Vivid includes an auto-hold function, rear-view camera with static guidelines, climate control air-conditioning with rear air vents (another feature neglected by numerous models at this price point), six-speaker audio system, leather multi-function steering wheel, along with a cooled glovebox.

Next up is the Soul ($27,990 plus ORCs), which brings 18-inch bi-colour polished alloy wheels, leather sports seats with six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, front fog-lights, and automatic wipers.

Sitting atop the GS range is the Essence X ($34,990 before on-roads) which gets a larger 2.0-litre turbocharged NetBlue petrol engine, pumping out an impressive 162kW of power and 350Nm of torque – the same as a Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Shifting cogs is a six-speed dual-clutch transmission instead of the seven-speed unit, with drive sent to all-four wheels via an on-demand all-wheel drive system with locking differential.

Additional features on the flagship model include visible dual exhaust points with trapezoidal tips, side steps, metal finish sports pedals, steering-mounted paddle shifters, auto-levelling xenon headlights, active rollover protection, hill descent control and a power sunroof.

For safety, all GS variants come standard with electronic stability program (ESP), corner brake control, emergency brake assist, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), along with dual front, side and curtain airbags.

The GS range was given a four-star safety rating by independent crash-testing authority, ANCAP.

Fuel consumption is rated at 7.3L/100km on the combined cycle for the manual-equipped Vivid, 7.4L/100km for the dual-clutch 1.5-litre Core and Soul models, while the 2.0-litre Essence X drinks a claimed 9.6L/100km combined.

Six colour options are available, four metallic (extra cost) – Sahara Gold, Mocha Brown, Scottish Silver, Electric Orange – along with two solid – Obsidian Black and Mountain White. The Essence X also gets the option of a contrasting black roof with Electro Orange and Mountain White.
